Certificate Courses

Anytime Tutor-Led

If you want to study on a dedicated program of courses with feedback and assessment, then we offer two Tutor-Led programs of courses developed and taught jointly by Pharos and the Society of Genealogists, called Family History Skills and Strategies.

There are two levels of program.  Family History Skills and Strategies (Intermediate) consists of 10 modules/courses and Family History Skills and Strategies (Advanced) consists of 8 modules/courses plus workshops, extra chats and one-to-one tuition.

The Advanced course is only open to those who have successfully completed the Intermediate course.

This page shows the 10 modules that make up the Family History Skills & Strategies (Intermediate) course sorted by Start Date.

You may choose which course to start the 10 module programme with, although we strongly recommend that you choose 200 level modules before 300 level modules. You may take the 10 modules over a period of 3 years and this should allow you to build in breaks between modules without taking modules that overlap.

Advanced Certificate Courses

Family History Skills and Strategies (Advanced) consists of four Pharos modules and four from the Society of Genealogists, together with group work, special topic chats, one-to-one sessions, and finishes with a family history project. This two-year programme provides in-depth study under expert guidance, with assessment and project work, towards a certificate in English genealogy at an advanced level (awarded by the SoG and Pharos jointly).  Unlike the Intermediate course, the Advanced modules are taken in a fixed progression over the two years, and start with Old Handwriting for Family Historians (417).

This course is suitable for amateur genealogists who wish to work with early records to the best of their ability at the highest standards, as well as aspiring professionals.  You will be taught skills to research with records of the period 1540 - 1800 and write up the research process so that you are prepared for professional work.

Pharos and the Society of Genealogists are working closely with AGRA on the assessment process for Family History Skills and Strategies (Advanced). This is to ensure that successful students achieve the same professional standards as those expected of applicants for AGRA Membership.

AGRA says "We are delighted to be working with Pharos and the Society of Genealogists to raise standards in advanced genealogy education, so that our decades of experience as professionals can benefit more genealogists and family historians."

Some modules also run as normal Pharos courses with or without assessment for those who are interested in an individual course as a stand-alone option. Click on the course title below for details of each module.

Advanced students work in small groups, and on their own, and will be allocated to a Tutor-Advisor on a one-to-one basis.

As with FHSS (Intermediate) there is an emphasis on practical aspects of research, but now working with records generally from an earlier period and at a more advanced level of understanding.

The programme consists of two blocks of instruction each lasting 12 months, and students must register for and sign up for each year in advance.  Year one assessment must be passed before proceeding to year two.

During 2015/2016 we are running the first year with a ‘pilot’ group of students. If you would like to be part of this exciting opportunity for 2016/2017 please let us know.

Course requirements:  Students must be graduates of Family History and Strategies (Intermediate)
