Simon's mother left Germany on Thursday 13 July 1939 – six weeks before the outbreak of the Second World War. She never saw her family again. He's always known about her past and whilst she didn't talk about it in any detail, she would occasionally slip something into the conversation about her childhood. On her death Simon inherited her papers, kept in the cardboard suitcase with which she left Germany. Using her as an example this presentation looks at the surprisingly detailed sources which are now largely available online for researching the Holocaust and the fate of individual victims as well as the gaps in the records. As a genealogist the talk will suggest how you might come to terms with such a traumatic history.
