Yorkshire is the largest county in England, stretching from the coast of the North Sea to the edge of the Lake District to the west, encompassing rural and industrial landscapes. The changes in county boundaries over time and the vast spread of records across many archives can be a source of confusion to the researcher with Yorkshire roots.
In 2026 we are bringing a brand new course, Researching Your Yorkshire Ancestors, written and presented by our Yorkshire-based tutor, Jude Rhodes.
The course aims to provide an overview of the diversity of Yorkshire, and its people, to gain or progress an understanding of family history research in the county of Yorkshire. Throughout the four-week course you will learn the historical background to Yorkshire and the division of Ridings with an understanding of administrative units and where records are held; the impact of the Industrial Revolution on family history; the breadth of occupations and the influence of religion.
By the end of the course you will have an understanding of Yorkshire communities through time, which archives and records are most relevant to your research and where to locate these.
