This talk outlines Nick’s quest to find out the identify of his maternal grandmother, whose origins posed the greatest genealogical brick wall – born illegitimately overseas, and then fostered informally. The ensuring research trail spanned three continents and involved a wide range of techniques, from DNA to directories, signatures and shipping lists, military records through mercantile traders – and produced some surprising results.
